Today we wrapped up racing at the Raceway Park of Midlands in Iowa. This is Big Chris and he is half of our two man team. Well at 6 foot 9 he is maybe more than half. Chris from the UK had his hands today on our Team Brenspeed Gas Monkey Garage 2015 Mustang. He did very well but felt the power we put under the hood might be a bit much as out of most turns the car was over powering the tires. Good news is that means we haul big time on the straights. This is only day 2 so as we get more wheel time we will likely get a bit more control of it. Its Sunday night and we are already into Colorado. Monday morning we race at High Plains Raceway which is in Deer Trail. We made great time driving tonight so we actually sat down for a meal. The One Lap Of America race is intense between racing, driving, and little sleep so food can be a good thing.
Started off great today by passing tech inspection. Now we are waiting for the first event which is a wet skid pad. The car feels good and it is ready to rock this week. Spirits are high because well… this is only day one. After the wet skid pad today we head directly to Iowa to race at 8am Sunday morning. Current Location, South Bend Indiana. #teamGMGBrenspeed #oloa2015
Today we raced what is called a wet skid pad. Basically spray water on a track and drive in a circle as fast as you can without sliding off. This is one of two skid pads we will be on this week. First thing Sunday morning we race a road course in Iowa. We are excited for the road course as that is what this car was built for. As soon as the skid pad was finished today we loaded up all our gear and hit the road. We made the 550 mile drive tonight so we are already near the track ready to go in the morning. We are averaging about 20 mpg which we are really happy with at the power level the car is set up at. Big Chris is on windshield duty in the picture below. His reach is perfect being 6 foot 9 inches tall!
OK so this may look crazy but yes this is what we pack in our car for the 1 lap race. Understand what you race is what you drive and when you break you need to have it with you. Here is a short list of our supplies that we packed into our 2015 Team brenspeed Gas Monkey Garage Mustang. The list is long so hang in there. Clothes for two drivers for 8 days of racing, race suites including helmets, spare brake pads, rotors, clutch, half shafts, sway bar end links, and spare tire. Remember this race is has to be ran on the same set of tires the entire week on track and off so our spare is for a disaster situation on the side of the road in the middle of the night. Duct tape, electrical tape, connections, wire, tools, JB weld, silicone, loc tite, clamps we have to be ready for anything! Razor scooters to check the tracks we are racing this week this is much better than walking! fuel can, tarp, chairs, more tools ( A lot), computers, and several classified go fast items. Fluids and a LOT OF LUCAS FLUIDS! Oil changes, trans changes, rear changes, and everything we need to keep the drive train in perfect working order. This racing will for sure boil some of the fluids so we are set. Maintenance is key! Radar detector, inverters, power supplies, it never ends on the electrical side of things. This car is slammed full and ready to go! The race starts tomorrow Saturday May 2nd! I left out a lot of items. Some because it is so buried in the car I couldn’t see them, and some because they are well….. top secret.
The team at Brenspeed has worked hard over the last two weeks getting the 2015 Mustang ready for the One Lap Of America. We are teaming up with Gas Monkey Garage to build the wicked 2015 Mustang. We have many supporters building this car so thanks to our friends at Afco, Ford Performance, Lucas Oil, Continental Tires, Gas Monkey, 360 Wraps, Kedan Logistics, Razor Scooters, and American Car Magazine for your support on this particular build!
Ok we are going to race about 3,500 miles in 7 days. The race is difficult and the constant daily track racing is going to be hard on the car. Afco Engineering has done a great job on helping us keep this Mustang cool. We have a HUGE aluminum radiator and a HUGE supercharger heat exchanger with dual fans. We are running a cooler thermostat and a custom cross over system to keep the coolant running fully through the block. We are also running Lucas Oil Super Coolant which will reduce our engine temps up to 20 degrees.
